Director's Corner - April

May 01, 2019 Miranda Johnson

Spring has sprung, and I am inspired!  I am inspired to be creative, to grow, to love, to be outdoors, to change, to overcome obstacles, and to enjoy my life.  In this state of inspiration, I am mindful of my favourite inspirational stories.  Whether you watch, read, or listen to stories, the following stories are sure to inspire you!  Each personal story has inspired a movie.

Adrift (2018)

What could you overcome?  The true-life survival story of Tami Oldham lost at sea after an intense hurricane.  Red Sky in Mourning: A True Story of Love, Loss, and Survival at Sea, is the autobiography of her horrifying experience at sea and, outlines her resilience to persevere despite the odds.

The Darkest Hour (2017)

What is your darkest hour?  Imagine you are the Prime Minister of England, your country is losing the war in Europe, and you are missing the support of parliament.  How will you inspire the nation to carry on?  One of the world’s greatest leaders encourages us to think about service, leadership, and the courage to carry on.

Eat, Pray, Love (2010)

What are you searching for?  A movie based on Elizabeth Gilbert’s introspective journey to find her balance, while travelling, eating, and meditating she finds love and life!

The Greatest Showman (2017)

What are your inspirational ideas? Amazing music combines with a unique screenplay, to celebrate the story of P.T. Barnum and his idea to create "the greatest show on Earth"!

Out of Africa (1985)

What lands have you explored?  A visually stunning motion picture that captures the riveting life of Danish author Karen Blixen (pen name, Isak Dinesen) and her life in Africa.  The movie is based on her memoir that was first published in 1937 and won the Best Picture Oscar in 1986.

The Social Network (2010)

Who do you connect with for inspiration?  Social networking has revolutionized our ability to connect.  Based on the biographical title The Accidental Billionaires: The Founding of Facebook, a Tale of Sex, Money, Genius, and Betrayal, this is the story of a great idea and the fight for ownership of that transformational idea.  Facebook revolutionized social connection and increased our ability to seek out those who inspire us.

Loving (2016)

What would you do for true love?  This is the real-life story of Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple in the 1960’s, whose love ignited a battle with the state of Virginia to obtain legal marital status.

The local heroes in our community also inspire me.  The library works closely with many everyday heroes with an inspiring commitment to ensure everyone in our community has a high-quality life. While there are too many to list here, I would like to recognize employees from Wheatland County, the Town of Strathmore, Marigold Library System, Wheatland Family & Community Support Services, Growing Families Society, AHS: Addiction & Mental Health, Strathmore Family & Community Support Services, our library staff, volunteers, and our dedicated library board.  Your zeal ignites an amazing local story!
