Meet Our Summer Students

Summer Reading Program Coordinators

Hi! My name is Jeannie Nelson and I am one of the Summer Reading Program Coordinators. I am so excited to help create an awesome program for the children and youth in our community! I just completed my first year at Red Deer Polytechnic in Film Production, so of course, one of my favourite activities is creating videos. In my free time, I also enjoy reading, writing songs, and watching hockey with my family. I love working with kids and being creative, so I hope to bring these skills to our program! We have lots of fun stuff planned and can’t wait to show you what we’ve prepared!

Hi my name is Karissa Carlson, and I will be one of the Summer Reading Program Coordinators this summer! Some of you may remember me as a coordinator from last summer, or from helping run the Book Buddies program last fall! I am so excited to continue working at the library, and am looking forward to helping put on a great program this summer! I graduated with a degree in Cellular, Molecular, and Microbial Biology from the University of Calgary this year and will be returning there in the fall to get a degree in Education, which was largely inspired by the love I had for this job last summer. In my free time, I love being around friends and family, playing/going for walks with my dog, cooking, and of course, reading!

I am so excited to use what we learned last year (both the mistakes and the things that worked) to work towards making this program even better! Additionally, I’m excited to be working with Luke and Jeannie as we’ve come up with so many fun and exciting ideas for the Summer Reading Program and the Teen Summer Reading Club this year! I’m so happy to be back at the library and I can’t wait for the summer to start so I can meet all of you!

Hi! My name is Luke Schramm, and I will be helping to coordinate the Summer Reading Program this year! This is my first summer at the library, so I am super excited to get started with the program alongside Jeannie and Karissa. I am headed into my second year of an English Literature degree at McGill University, and have always had a passion for stories in all forms. I love to read, write, watch movies, attend plays, and I really enjoy anything centered around creative storytelling. Lately, I’ve been really into American literature, especially John Steinbeck, and I am always looking for new reading recommendations! I grew up playing several sports including baseball, basketball, and cross-country running. As a result, I became a huge sports fan and love to spend my evenings watching games, especially the NBA. I also love pool, cards, music, and bike rides with friends over the summer months.

I am beyond excited for this year’s Summer Reading Program. It has been so fun to work on and develop our program based on this year’s Myths and Legends theme, which gives us so much to explore for all age groups. I am incredibly happy to have this opportunity and cannot wait for the summer to start!
