Hi, my name is Shayla Kopp, and I am one of the Summer Reading Program Coordinators for this summer! I am a student at the University of Lethbridge, taking a double degree in Indigenous Studies and Education and I’m hoping to teach elementary school when I graduate! I have been a member of the Strathmore Library for longer than I can remember, and reading is one of my favourite hobbies! My top three favourite books right now are The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern, Unwind by Neal Shusterman and Illuminae by Amie Kaufman. I mostly read young adult fiction but love any and all books, so if you have a recommendation send it my way! I also spend a lot of time playing board games with my family and friends, my top three favourites are, Ticket to Ride, Azul and Kingdomino! I love spending time outside, especially camping during the summer, and can’t wait for the hot weather to be here!
Although this Summer Reading Program is going to look different than years past, it is going to be a great experience. We will all be learning and working together to create an innovative and new experience for Summer 2020! I am hoping to further my skills in planning and event organization while engaging with the community. I want to help foster community, learning and passion for reading this summer through engaging and fun activities, that your children will love. I am so excited to work with Morgan and create a brand-new summer reading experience for summer 2020!
Hi everyone! My name is Morgan Bahan, some of you may remember me from last year, but I am excited to be one of your Summer Reading Program Coordinators again this year! I just finished up my second year of Elementary Education at Red Deer College, I plan on finishing my degree in the next two years at Burman University, and hope to further my education after that. Before going to school I had worked in childcare for several years both as a nanny and as a childcare assistant in daycare. I love working with children and helping them learn. It helps that I am a super hardworking, passionate individual, who strives to do my best in everything I do. In my spare time, I tend to be outdoors trying to find something to do, staying active, or reading a book (mostly just mysteries or thrillers). I recently got a puppy though, so that is mostly how I spend my spare time now!
In light of our situation, the summer reading program will look different this year, but I am super excited to be apart of it. I am looking forward to trying to set up a program with my other coordinator, Shayla, for the summer. I know it may be difficult and we will all have learning curves to overcome, but I hope it can help me further my skills in programming and planning. Coordinating the summer reading program also allows me to try and engage with new kids, families, and my community. I know that may be tough this year, but I know we will find ways to stay connected. The more and more I look into and think of activities for the program, the more eager I get every day to start. I am super glad for the opportunity to be joining the Strathmore Municipal Library team for the summer again, and I look forward to starting the TD Summer Reading Program again!
Hi, my name is Nickia. I am currently performing an administrative role for the summer reading program, and I am super excited for the opportunities to connect with the community this summer. I am currently attending the University of Alberta for a Bachelor of Arts Psychology degree. My goal is to become an Industrial Organisational Psychologist in the future. Some of my hobbies include scouring YouTube tutorials for piano songs, baking, drawing, watching Netflix (if that counts), and, of course, reading. My favourite book is currently 1984 by George Orwell, and I would recommend The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett as well as The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins. I also loved the How to Train Your Dragon series by Cressida Cowell as I was growing up and re-read it obsessively. I also love studio Ghibli, rainy days, and cats. I am looking forward to working on the program this summer… stay tuned for more information about it!
